About Hollow Breakout 2:
Between Xbox, Gamepass for PC, and Steam, I’m likely nearing 300 hours in this game. I have (almost) every achievement, and Hollow Knight is my favorite video game of all time, no contest. There are just too many things this game does astoundingly that it’s impossible to list them all. But I’ll try. The atmosphere is unparalleled. I highly recommend playing with just the in game music and sounds on your first playthrough. You get so immersed into the world of Hallownest and all of its mystery and secrets to explore. Getting lost in this game doesn’t feel like a problem, because there’s always something hidden right around the corner. The music and sound design are top notch. Composed by Christopher Larkin, the music in this game is always incredible, whether it’s the ambient background music of a new area, or the intense, riveting theme of a difficult boss. In other areas, the sound design makes you feel wistful or anxious or nervous or dream-like. Whatever the game wants you to feel, you’ll feel it because of the music and sound. The gameplay is crisp and fluid. I’ve only ever played with a controller, but it’s easily the best way to play. Your inputs are never eaten or ignored, and the control you have over your character is precise, which is necessary for a difficult game like this. I’ve never played a better designed game. If you ever mess up, fail, or take damage, it’s always your fault. The game is hard, but not unfair. Whenever someone new to the game asks me how to beat a boss, the best advice I can give is to get good. There’s no cheese, at least none you can easily figure out. No two bosses are the same, and each area is fresh and unique. The sheer variety of enemies, bosses, characters, and places make you want to keep playing, keep exploring because you want to know what’s just out of reach. The lore and story is subtle and in the background, but can be pieced together by the player as they progress. It leaves you wanting more, and the more you find out, the more interesting it is.
